MISSION SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

A citizen-centered energy system

Citizen involvement is crucial to achieving success in the transformation of Denmark's energy system. We need to ensure that the public is involved in key decisions and a fair process that creates value for citizens and local communities. This is the only way that we develop a future energy system with respect for all citizens involved.

I think involvement is absolutely crucial. It doesn't help much in a democracy if you aren’t able to communicate with citizens and to citizens, and also hear what citizens have to say.

Connie Hedegaard, Chair, OECD's Round Table for Sustainable Development

Citizens are becoming increasingly aware of the need for sustainable energy solutions. But it is crucial to understand that this support for green energy does not always mean automatic support, especially when the projects affect their local area. Citizens don't want to be just spectators in these changes; they want to actively participate in the decision-making process on how projects will be implemented locally.

We ensure this by focusing on the following three principles:

  1. 1

    Democratic involvement

Democratic involvement is essential. Citizens demand to be consulted and to have a real say in the decision-making process. Therefore, it is important that we explore different methods for involvement that ensure all stakeholders feel heard and respected.

  2. 2

    Fair process og output

A fair process is not just about following formal guidelines; it is also about ensuring that the decision-making process is open, transparent and inclusive. The results of these processes should benefit citizens and local communities as a whole. This can include economic benefits, improved quality of life, environmental benefits and stronger community cohesion. It is thus important to ensure that all stakeholders feel that they are treated fairly and that the decision-making process benefits them in a meaningful way.

  3. 3

Creating value for citizens and the local community

It is crucial to clarify what adds value for citizens and communities, and this must be done in close cooperation with stakeholders. Value can manifest itself in various ways, including strengthening community, protecting natural resources, and promoting local job opportunities and economic growth. By identifying and prioritizing these values, we can create a more meaningful and sustainable energy solution that all parties can support.
